Belinda Naidoo, General Manager, KZN Care Association, October 2019
“From the first day I started as GM at KZNCA, it has been my personal mission to introduce or promote a Person- Centred approach and to facilitate a transformation from Institution to Home. Sadly this mission soon seemed unattainable against the reality of the day-to-day challenges of managing an Organization of this size, with 350 residents, 200 staff and the challenge of dwindling resources.
The Eden Alternative training however highlighted how it was possible to achieve this in small ‘bite-size chunks’… little changes that shifts the focus on the care of the human spirit as well as the care of the human body.
Through Eden Alternative I was reminded of the basics – that including elders in decision making, offering choices and engaging in meaningful conversations are all feasible changes that contributes to a human habitat. Another example is assigning staff to the same House or Elders is a simple and achievable way to ensure that the elder is well known, and they are able to forge close relationships.
And with Eden the possibilities are limitless…
Following the training we initiated "stop and chat teatime’ where all staff & students in that house stop what they’re doing and sit down with a resident and chat over a cup of tea.
My mission has been resuscitated through Eden Alternative… watch this space!"
