Avril Maltman, Senior Nursing Manager, Elphin Lodge, Johannesburg, October 2019
“As we commenced our Eden journey in 2012 the enormity of what Sr. Tando Ncube and I faced with beginning our journey seemed insurmountable.
As a 160 bed care community it seemed impossible to even decide where we were going to begin and it was then decided that at least 1 person from each of the 6 wings, admin, OT support services i.e housekeeping, security and grounds personnel should be an Eden Associate in order that we could share the journey and have more input. The saying “many hands make light work” goes the same for the Eden journey where many brains are able to come up with many more ideas with loving hearts.
We have now successfully trained 46 Eden Associates at the Ron Smith Care Centre and the impact on our residents’ lives has been tremendous. The relationships that have developed between the Elders and Care partners is something special to behold.”
What do the care partners come back with after a 3 day Eden Associate Training?
“The care partners’ come back with a sense of belonging and that they form an integral part of the community.
It is with awe that I have witnessed how the care partners have grown personally and their voices are heard. We receive many compliments from the community from security and the entire care centre how caring and obliging our care partners are.”
