The manager of Huis Goedversorg in Boshof in the Free State was a bit surprised on a Monday morning to see a resident in the care centre (frail care) sleeping in a sleeping bag. She asked around and was referred to Valencia the carer, who told her.
‘My resident kept on kicking off her blankets during the night and we tried everything, a duvet, bigger sheets, everything but still she managed to get them off, and we know it gets really cold at night in winter in the Free State.’
‘Last week we learned how important a good night’s sleep is and with us fussing over her bed and bedding, we wake her and she never gets to sleep through. Well, Mama Roti, on Friday when my resident’s daughter came to visit, I told her about this and together we decided we must try a sleeping bag for her mother. She drove to Bloemfontein to buy a sleeping bag. My resident now sleeps warm and we do not have to wake her to fix her bed.’
Huis Goedversorg in Boshof, celebrated their 50th year of existence in September 2019 and we would like to thank Trudie Pieters (Mama Roti) for her wise leadership, tenacity and absolute commitment to creating a better world for the residents and staff of Huis Goedversorg.
Extremely limited financial resources is a reality for this care community, but fortunately an even bigger and stronger reality is the authentic relationships between everyone who enters the garden gate of this home.
Valencia Mgidi has been working at Huis Goedversorg for 15 years, and as so many other hands-on care partners (carers), she really knows and cares for the residents she interacts with, and supports every day.
Every care community, no matter what the size or what their financial status might be, would not exist without people like Valencia, who work long hours, offer support with very intimate self care tasks and make a difference with their touch and their smile every moment of every day.
Valencia, and all other hands-on care partners, we are so grateful for you. Your value cannot be measured. We, Eden Alternative South Africa, commit to recognise you, to value your opinion and honour your contribution to creating a better world for Elders.
