“Animals are such agreeable friends – they ask no questions, they pass no criticisms.” George Eliot
While keeping in tune with the Eden Alternative and trying to make our House for Elderly in Vrede a home, Avondvrede took in cats as pets for the residents.
Research showed that animals help reduce stress, lower blood pressure and increase social interaction and physical activity. While this held great rewards and helped to create a warmer and more caring environment, we also faced some challenges.
One of these challenges were that the cats were not spayed, this led to a rapid increase in the number of cats at the Home. Research showed that one feline can give birth to three litters of kittens per year. With an average of four kittens per litter, in an average of 15 years, it could result in 180 kittens. This is a staggering amount.
This left the staff worried and frustrated. The booming feline population also ended up being a financial burden, as they all needed to be fed. The most obvious solution to our problem was to get the cats spayed but proved to be too costly and the Home could not afford it.
Some of the residents in our Independent Apartments volunteered to adopt some of the kittens and had them spayed when they were old enough.
The remaining kittens were adopted out to a local farmer. This left Avondvrede with only two remaining felines. The town’s local friendly animal loving doctor, dr Marcel Nel, heard of our challenge and volunteered to be a cat sponsor.
So doing, she financed the spaying of both cats and got them up to date with their immunizations. Our local veterinarians also gave dr Nel a discount on the final account.
This just shows how one caring heart can influence many. I encourage all Homes facing like challenges to ask for local sponsors to help get their pets spayed.
All it takes is one caring heart. We would like to thank dr Marcel Nel and our local veterinarians for their compassion and caring towards Avondvrede’s Animals.
